The very idea of a prison is terrible enough to keep most people on this side of the law. To be deprived of freedom of movement and the opportunity to see loved ones, destroy career prospects, not to mention the risk of all types of attacks from hardened criminals - what could be worse?
Unless to be in the most terrible prison in the world, in comparison with which other prisons seem to be a summer camp.
10. The Black Dolphin Prison, Russia
This special regime penal colony contains the most dangerous criminals from all over Russia, including cannibals, terrorists and pedophiles.
Prisoners sleep when the lights are on, and are constantly under video surveillance. And when they leave the cell under guard, a dog handler with a dog follows them. The size of the cells is small - 4.5 m², and the room is a cage in a cage, since a steel grill separates people from windows and doors.
Whenever convicts walk along the corridors, they are blindfolded, which prevents them from remembering the prison plan, reducing the possibility of escape. The hands of the convicts are chained behind the back while moving, and the head is lowered low - this is the so-called “swallow pose”.
Even prisoners walk with their hands bound behind their backs.
This strategy has proven to be effective because there have not yet been shoots from the Black Dolphin.
9. Correctional Facility Sante, France
The only prison remaining in Paris is known for its harsh, if not cruel, conditions of detention. Many prisoners committed suicide while serving their sentences in Santa. For example, in 1999, 124 prisoners committed suicide.
Violence in this prison is so widespread that prisoners leave their cells for only four hours a day.
There is a sad irony in the fact that the name "Sante" translates as "health." It is given by the name of a nearby street.
8. Bangkwang Prison, Thailand
This penitentiary located in Bangkok is known as Bangkok Hilton thanks to an Australian TV show in which Nicole Kidman played a major role.
Thais themselves call this prison the "Big Tiger", hinting that it is devouring its victims. It contains prisoners sentenced to death or a long term of imprisonment, so few of them ever come out of the jaws of the Big Tiger.
In Bangkwang, torture is practiced, and convicts (25 people or more) are kept in small cells of 6 x 4 meters. The criminals are fed once a day, and the rest of the food they have to buy with the money that relatives or friends give. Due to overcrowding in the cells, the lack of good sanitary conditions and poor nutrition, the Big Tiger often has outbreaks of cholera, diphtheria, malaria and other diseases.
7. La Sabaneta Prison, Venezuela
The worst prisons in the world are usually crowded with prisoners. But even among them, La Sabaneta stands apart. The building, designed for only 700 people, contains more than 3,700 prisoners. At the same time, there is an acute shortage of personnel in the prison, and only 150 security guards per 150 prisoners.
There is no proper sanitation, plastic bags are used as toilets, prisoners are washed from a common bucket of water, and drinking water is teeming with parasites and bacteria.
Violence in La Sabaneta is as much a part of everyday life as eating or sleeping. Rape and even beheading are common.
Most prisoners sleep in cramped hammocks, which are located in narrow corridors and even on the roof of the prison. Only gang leaders with money and power can afford basic services such as medical care and their own camera with a fan and TV.
6. La Modello, Colombia
In this notorious prison, prisoners have easy access to weapons and even grenades, and bloodshed is common. One of the worst examples is the death of 25 prisoners killed on April 27, 2000.
According to political views, prisoners in La Modelo are divided into left and right. Accordingly, the prison is divided into two sectors, between which there is a war. Moreover, the right-wing sector even has its own prison, in which offenders are sent to prison.
5. Muhang Prison, Rwanda
This is the most crowded prison in the world. About 7,000 prisoners are in a facility designed for a total of 400 people. However, in a country like Rwanda, where half a million people were killed as a result of genocide, prison conditions are not the focus of most citizens.
Many people held in Muhang prison have no choice but to stand all day, and they have to cuddle tightly against each other due to a chronic lack of free space. The crowding is so great that many prisoners die of suffocation and disease, not waiting for the day of release.
As in most of the other most terrible prisons in the world, there are practically no sanitary conditions in Muhang. Due to the fact that the floor is covered with a layer of sewage, many prisoners experience leg infections that are treated fundamentally by amputation of the feet or toes.
4. Guantanamo, USA
If the other worst prisons do not at least pretend to respect human rights, then the hypocrisy of the “world stronghold of democracy” clearly manifested itself when the world learned about the atrocities happening in Guantanomo prison.
There are prisoners with combatant status, and are subject to trial by a special military commission. Most of them are Muslims. Many of the prisoners have not been formally charged.
According to the prisoners themselves, as well as human rights organizations, various tortures are applied to prisoners in Guantanamo, including sleep deprivation, prolonged listening to music at maximum volume, beatings, and imitation of drowning.
3. ADX Florence, USA
This maximum security prison is a “cleaner version of Hell.” Moreover, such an epithet was invented not by journalists, but by the former head of the prison.
It is designed to contain the most dangerous criminals, many of whom are held in solitary confinement around the clock in 2.1 × 3.7 m cells. They spend 23 hours in cells and spend the remaining hour in a separate room where you can walk or do physical exercises .
The table, bed and chair in the ADX Florence cameras are made of cast concrete. However, they have such a "luxury" as a toilet and sink without a tap. For exemplary behavior, prisoners can be transferred to a cell with a TV, radio and polished steel mirror bolted to the wall.
2. Tadmor prison, Syria
The prison, located in the Syrian city of Tadmor, has a reputation as one of the worst prisons in the world. The ill-treatment, torture and inhuman treatment within the walls of this prison made her notorious throughout the world.
The most shocking incident in the Tadmor prison occurred on June 27, 1980, when, on the orders of military leader Rifat Assad, soldiers killed approximately 500 prisoners at a time. It was revenge for the attempted Muslim Brotherhood on Syrian President Hafez al-Assad.
Syrian poet Faraj Berakdar, who served a five-year sentence in the Tadmor prison, called it the "kingdom of death and madness."
1. Camp 22, North Korea
Inside Camp 22, there are approximately 50,000 prisoners, most of whom have been sentenced for life to criticizing the North Korean government. What is even more shocking is that Camp 22 is only one of 30 such concentration camps operating in North Korea.
The conditions in the worst prison in the world are clearly made as terrible as possible. Malnutrition is the norm, and all prisoners must work and are essentially slaves of the state, carrying out heavy physical work free of charge.
There are even reports that human experimentation is practiced in political prison camps in North Korea. In one of the official UN reports on the violation of human rights in the DPRK, the situation with the camps in the country was compared with the crimes of the Nazis in Germany during the Second World War.
